Has it really been 9 days since my last post? Time flies when your having fun or just too busy to blog (let's just keep it real here, shall we). But I have been out trailing the city of London scoping out fabulous venues, events and fashionable destinations just for you guys.
Recently, I was invited to an event at a very unique venue, Old Vic Tunnels (under the Waterloo train station), hosted by the London Contemporary Orchestra. If the graffiti filled under passage doesn't have you running to the hills (although bright, creative and intoxicating as it may be), the 1970's rave style horror film backdrop will definitely have you questioning your safety and insanity, because you will be intrigued .
I inquired about the history of this cave like space and unconsciously hoping for a documentary inspired historic Old English style dungeon used to house prisoners in the 18th century. But the prison would come to an end leaving only one survivor to tell the story of the riot which sparked an enormous fire killing all and putting an end to the torturous prison in the early 1900's. Obviously, my imagination runs deeps, as this was not the history I was given at all. Instead, I was informed that the Old Vic Tunnels were built as underground arches to support the trains at Waterloo from dipping into what was once a valley. The space was considered useless and used as storage for many, many years until it was later cleared and left abandoned. In February 2010, the Old Vic was reopened as an underground theatre which began with the showing of Banksy's, Exit through the Gift Shop. Since then it has hosted concerts and other artistic performances.
The venue, including the Bunker bar is an experience worth taking, at least once.
Enjoy!
