In My Opinion: Is Indonesia ready for E-retailing?
A question posed to my students several times while in Indonesia. In unison they always say "No". I would agree, at least not in respects to its popularity to Indonesia's neighbors, Singapore, China, and Hong Kong; and that of the US and UK of course. But as an avid online shopper and devastated by this fact, I had to know if it was me or do people really not shop online. So far I found the online shopping community here a deserted island and this was very disappointing.
You will find that some Indonesian retailers and innovative entrepreneurs are aiming to capture the heart of Indonesians and their massive consumer spending addictions, online, such as blibli, Tokopedia and Mutiply. However, these platforms are more like discount retail sites or Ebay copies. International retailers and brands such as ZARA, Mango, Gucci, TopShop, Dorothy Perkins--brands offering successful online shopping services, have yet to open the doors to their online shops in Indonesia.
